Hamster powered mouse charger! - Paul O'Flaherty

Yep, weird as it may sound I have to ask why I can’t but a hamster powered charger for my wireless mouse?

Let me explain! I was browsing GMAFB, and I came across a link to a site called “I want one of those” where they are selling USB powered hamster wheels for $24.95.

The USB Hamster Wheel is an utter delight. Plug it into your USB port, load the software from the CD provided and get typing. As you type, the hamster gets running, spinning the hamster wheel around in the process – the faster you type, the faster he runs. This demented rodent sent shrieks of laughter around the office when we tested it, and is the ultimate parody of modern society.

This battery and USB powered gimmick might be fun in an odd sort of way but the idea of a hamster wheel plugged into a USB port got me thinking about how much energy is generated when a real hamster runs around in a real hamster wheel!

I believe, that the rotating wheel should (I haven’t done the calculations as I’m too lazy) be able to generate enough electricity to recharge a mouse or a mobile phone.

Just plug the item into a charging station outside your rodents cage which is hooked up either a dynamo type system connected to the wheel, or create a little electric generator out of the center of the wheel.

The ability of the rig to charge your mouse or phone would largely be dependant on the activity of the hamster that you have so you may have to resort to the wall socket every now and then for charging, however, free electricity is still free electricity!

I don’t own a hamster, nor will I ever as Ex doesn’t like them, but apparently I’m not the only one who has thought of something like this!

Just check out the how fast these little buggers can run!
